Historical Legend
According to spiritual scriptures, there was a very handsome forest called Chaithrath. In the jungle, Sage Medhani, son of Sage Chyavan, used to do hard penance. In this forest, Devraj Indra used to walk around with Gandharva girls, Apsaras and Gods. Sage Medhani was a worshipper of Lord Shiva and Apsaras were well-wishers of Kamdev, who didn’t follow Shiva. Once a time, Kamdev send an apsara named Manju Ghosha to break the attention of Sage Medhani doing austerity. She succeeds in breaking Sage’s concentration by dancing and singing in front of him, whereas even Sage Medhavi got besotted by her beauty. After that, they both big time spent together. One day when Manju Ghosha asked his assent to leave, Sage Medhavi realized his mistake and how his penance was disturbed. Due to this he got very annoyed and cursed Manju Ghosha to be a Pishachini or an Evil Spirit. Hearing that, the apsara started crying lay on Sage feet and pleaded him to share the remedy for getting rid of this curse. After pleading for several times, Sage Medhavi told her to fast on Papmochani Ekadashi and said that by fasting on this day, you’ll get rid of all your sins and bad deeds and be able to get your old appearance back. After telling the apsara the remedy, Sage Medhavi went to his father, Maharishi Chyavan and told him about the curse. He said, Son, you didn’t do well, as you too have earned a sin by doing this, which is why you must also go ahead with Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat.
In this way by doing Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat, the apsara got rid of her curse and Sage Medhavi of his sins.
