Children's Day is celebrated on 14 November in India to honor the birth anniversary of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. He was born on 14 November 1889. Jawaharlal Nehru had huge love, care, and liking for children and so, they call him Chacha Nehru. (Let us have a look at Children's Day and its celebrations).
Children's Day is celebrated to raise consciousness among people towards the rights, care, schooling, and education of children. Children are the future and opportunity of the country, the key of success and development which leads the country in a new technical’s way. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14th November 1889. He was the 1st Prime Minister of India who ruled the country for the longest time. He was a great follower of and affluence and peace. Pandit Nehru Jayanti is a festival for the country of India. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is not only known for his political career or for the service of the country but was also well-known among children and youth. Why is Children’s Day Celebrated on 14 November in India?

Children’s day is celebrated every year to raise consciousness about the rights, care, and education of children. Children are the key to and development and success of the country. Jawaharlal Nehru also love children and he always well liked to be in the middle of them. After India's independence, he did a lot of superior work for children and youth. When he became the Prime Minister, his 1st priority was the education of children.

Pandit Nehru worked so much for the progress, education, well being and kalyan of the children as well as youth of India. He had recognized many educational institutions such as (Indian Institutes of Technology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Indian Institutes of Management). Free primary education, free meals include milk were provides to the school children in order to stop children from malnutrition in India.

According to Pandit Nehru, children are the brilliant future of the country. Only by the correct education, care and progress we can give them a new good life. Therefore, after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (1964), to honor and for remembering he, the date of his birthday in India ie 14 November started to be celebrated as Children's Day. Therefore, the deep love and prompting of Chacha Nehru towards the children is the big reason for celebrating the Children’s Day at his birth anniversary. He said that children are the country’s actual power as they would make developed civilization in the future.

But do you know that after independence and before 1964, Children's Day in India was celebrated on 20 November. Let us see the reason behind it.

The foundation of Children's Day was laid in 1925 and in 1953, it was recognized worldwide.

On 20 November, the United Nations (UN) announces to celebrate Children's Day. Due to this, Children's Day was famous on 20 November in India also. But in a lot of countries, it is celebrated on different days. Like in 1950, Child defense Day (June 1) is celebrated in lots of countries as Children's Day which is also known as World Children's Day.

After independence, in 1959, the 1st Children's Day was celebrated in India. But after the demise of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, the Children's Day festivity date was changed from 20 November to 14 November (birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru). But still lots of countries in the world celebrate Children's Day on 20, November.

How is Children's Day celebrated in India?

A lot of program includes cultural and fun activities are organized all over India. Government and non-government organizations, NGOs, schools, private bodies and other perform a variety of competition for the children to let them known about their rights and make them  cheer and happy. TV channels also show the interesting programs for the children on the 14th of November. Parents take part in this event very zealously to make their children happy; they distribute gifts, greeting cards to their daughters and sons. They go on a picnic, long drive and enjoy the day with the celebration.

How is Children's Day celebrated with orphans and underprivileged children in India?

Many Non-Governmental Organizations organize doing programs for the poor and deprived children. Children are distributed gifts and chocolates. Varieties of competition are organized such as fancy dress, speech, debates related to the freedom fighters, storytelling, country and quizzes.  Cultural and social programs like dancing, singing and entertaining with other musical instruments are part of it.  Children can be happy by distributing clothes, toys, musical instruments, stationery, books, etc.  Organizing some game activities including puzzles, treasure hunt, etc. are of great amusement. Underprivileged children are entertained and motivating by organizing musical programs by famous musicians and speeches on health, care, and progress.

What are the intentions behind the celebration of Children's Day in India?

The future of the country depends on children and youth. If they do not develop in a proper way, the country's future will be ruined. People who neglect their children will get an occasion on this day to think about it. The whole society should think about its duty and liability towards children. It is necessary to analyze what has been done in the past and what can be done in the upcoming years for the children.
